First-time Homeowners' Decorating Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

When we found our first home, I remember wanting it to be warm and welcoming right away. Living in an empty white box for months while we figured out what to do next was just not appealing to me. BUT I learned that if you jump in before you’re ready, not only will you end up creating more work for yourself to fix the mistakes you’ve made—you’ll waste a heck of a lot of money, too.  So today I’m sharing what I believe are the top ten mistakes that first-time homeowners make, and how you can avoid them!

I can definitely relate to #5. When buying a desk and bookshelves for our office we wanted it all to be the same color and wood. I was not expecting it to look so lifeless and just Blah, but I didn’t know why- until now. Great article!! I will definitely be referring back to this when I buy my first home.

I think this is the best decorating article I’ve ever read! Thanks for sharing your info. I’m in contract for my second home, which is a 1900 cottage with original moldings, and high ceilings. I’m leaving a tiny 1940’s ranch, where small everything was my goal. so a big change. The factor of keeping period appropriate really stuck with me, and i agree, but what type of peices are early 1900 but still livable?

I’m so guilty of number 7! Haha. i always feel like there should be something up on them – whether it be shelves, picture frames, mirrors, clocks, or whatever i feel will make use of the space. i didn’t really realize that it was a home decor no-no.

Thanks Jodi! The dining table is vintage, we found it on Craigslist. We added the marble leaf with leftover countertop material from our kitchen reno!
