ORC Week 4: Playroom Makeover

The biggest challenge I face in decorating any room is always of my own creation: self-doubt.  I’m constantly second-guessing myself…Does this look good? Is it really my style, or am I just imitating someone else?

This is what I faced this week.  And whenever I’m driving myself crazy like that, I try to remind myself that if my family and I think it’s beautiful, then it is.  Taste is so subjective anyways.  The homes that we create are for ourselves to enjoy, and as long as we’re happy in them, that’s all that matters.  Of course, easier said than done!

Anyways, welcome back to Linda from Calling it Home’s One Room Challenge, where designers and bloggers make over a room in their house in just 6 weeks.  If you missed the beginning of the series, you can catch up on it here and here.  And be sure to check out all of the other fabulous rooms and maybe discover a few new blogs!  I’ve been working on C’s playroom, which today looks like this:

I’m really digging how this part of the room is coming out.  I scored some awesome finds at Sweet Clover Barn this past weekend, including this vintage school chair, the red tote-all, and the maps from which I DIY’d the map bunting (learn how to make your own with this tutorial!).

When I purchased the chair, it was actually covered in white chalk paint.  But, I needed some contrast and color in the desk area.  So I spent an hour sanding it and spray painted the legs in green Krylon spray paint.  (Side note: I was not impressed with Krylon’s coverage, and will be sticking with Rustoleum in the future).  I still have to seal it, so the seat and back will end up being slightly darker.  But I love the green!

Here is what I accomplished this week:

  • Painted the baskets.  This is another place where I’m second-guessing myself.  What do you think?  I only painted one side, so I can always turn them around again.  I ditched my original plan of stenciling numbers on them, because the sides without the square holes did not look as polished.  Should I turn them around, so that they are basket-colored again?
  • Painted the desk white.
  • Made the map bunting.
  • Purchased, sanded, and painted the vintage school chair.  To be finished next week.
  • Purchased the tote-all, which is where we now store all of C’s rubber stamps and ink.  It works great!
  • Primed the train table (not pictured)

IMG_4213And here is what I’m struggling with: the book nook.  The pillows aren’t really working, and I’m afraid the wall is too Scandinavian-esque to fit well with the rest of the room.  I finished this last week but didn’t include it in last week’s post because I was still working out how I felt about it.  I’d love any suggestions for this corner!

Here is what I have left to do:

  • Paint the train table.
  • DIY the magnet board.
  • Finish the school chair.
  • Solve the problem of the book nook.

Good luck to all of the other ladies making over their rooms!

Do any of you struggle like I do with “decorating confidence”? I’d love to hear I’m not alone!

i love it so far- the chair looks awesome, and i agree 100% about paint brands when it comes to spray paint.
as for the book nook- i LOVE the house outline, and agree the pillows aren’t working. it feels to dark and heavy compared to the lightness of the rest of the space. what about bringing in some lime green fabrics- polka dot pillows? or i think red would also be a fun accent over there.

Awesome ideas! I’m heading over to Joann’s today to pick up some fabrics for pillow covers, I think you’re right about lighter being the way to go.

Hey so I just linked over from HouseUpdated and admittedly haven’t read the whole series to this room update–but I really like! I like the book nook painted wall. I say keep that. What about a cozy fort type thing below instead of pillows… Or…mini bean bag…or poofs or something? Maybe you’ve already addressed those ideas in an earlier post though. Anyway, fun stuff!

It looks so great! Love the vintage feel – the chair, and books.
Decorating confidence??! HA! I have to be able to bring something home and look at it for a week before I can really decide if it works, if I like it, etc. Trial & Error is about how it goes around here!
    Can’t wait to see more!
